The 2023 Energy Storage International Conference, jointly organized by the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Energy Research Society and China Energy Storage Alliance, was successfully held in Beijing Shougang Exhibition & Convention Center on April 7–9, 2023. The conference was supported by the National Energy Administration, the Department of Electronic Information of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the Bureau of International Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. With the theme of "Seeking a New Mechanism for Electricity and Creating a New Era for Energy Storage", representatives from government agencies, energy storage enterprises, research institutes, power grid companies, power generation groups, system integrators, energy service providers and other related units participated in the event, with more than 100,000 attendees. The opening ceremony of the Conference was hosted by Ms. LIU Wei, Secretary General of China Energy Storage Alliance.
SHI Yubo, Director of the China Energy Research Society, stated that as the energy transition progresses, the key role of energy storage in supporting the clean and low-carbon transformation of the energy structure will become more and more prominent. Looking ahead, traditional lithium-ion battery energy storage technology will still dominate; compressed air energy, flow batteries and other long-duration energy storage technology will also be accelerated to apply in the electricity sectors. The development of more new energy storage technologies will come out of the laboratory into the market.
XIANG Haiping, the Chief Engineer of the National Energy Administration, said that the National Energy Administration attaches great importance to new energy storage technology innovation and industrial development, and has initially built a policy system guided by top-level design policy and supported by special policies such as project management, scheduling and utilization, market mechanism, price and safety management. XIANG Haiping believes that, the current development of new energy storage in China presents that a diversified development foundation continues to solidify; the development trend of large-scale energy storage application is stronger and industrial development is steadily advancing. While he also proposes that as a new technology, new industry, the development of new energy storage is still facing many risks and challenges. It is suggested to focus on the overall relationship between the three aspects: (1) the relationship between construction and use, not only to speed up the planning and construction, but also to focus on scheduling and use; (2) the relationship between short-term and medium- and long-term for the sound development of energy storage industry; (3) the relationship between development and security.
YANG Xudong, Deputy Director of the Department of Electronic Information of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that at the present time, the central deployment to promote high-quality development of the key period, photovoltaic, lithium, including electrochemical energy storage industry has shown a very prosperous development trend, but also bear an important historical responsibility. With these achievements, we also need to keep in mind that there are still some uncoordinated, unbalanced situation within the energy storage industry, e.g. the industry supply and demand mismatch phenomenon emerges; upstream resources need to be strengthened; forward-looking layout and innovation development needs to be further integrated and optimized. The next step will be to promote the high-quality development of the new energy storage industry in four areas: top-level design, technological innovation, industrial resilience, and supporting systems.
WANG Zhenyu, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the Chinese Academy of Sciences has a comprehensive layout in the field of energy storage technology research and development, with close cooperation and exchanges at home and abroad. More than 20 research institutes carry out long-term "fundamental, strategic and forward-looking" research work on energy storage. The strength of the discipline has a more prominent influence in the international arena and basically covers all energy storage technologies, including compressed air energy storage, thermal storage, flywheel, lithium battery, liquid flow battery, sodium-sulfur battery, superconductivity, supercapacitor, etc. In the future, the Chinese Academy of Sciences will further strengthen its support for international cooperation and exchange in research and development in the field of energy storage, and make greater contributions to the global green development and the realization of China's development goals of "carbon peaking, carbon neutrality".
GUO Xiaoyong, Deputy Director of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, believes that energy storage has become an international top research direction and industrial layout focus, and governments attach great importance to it. The global energy storage industry is also booming, with breakthroughs in a variety of energy storage technologies, improving policy guidance, and rapid growth in the installed capacity of the energy storage industry. The Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has always focused on major scientific and technological problems in the field of energy and power, carried out fundamental research, key technology breakthrough and engineering applications. The institute actively promotes the transfer and transformation of S&T achievements, forms a full value chain of science and technology innovation development model focusing on light aviation power, clean utilization of coal, advanced gas turbines, distributed and renewable energy, and advanced energy storage systems and other aspects of scientific research work. The Institute will make use of all resources and conditions to support the development of the Energy Storage Alliance and the energy storage business, and support the holding of the Energy Storage International Conference and its series of activities to provide a platform for communication and collaboration between the academia and industries, both nationally and internationally.
CHEN Haisheng, Professor of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences / Director of China Energy Storage Alliance, said that new energy storage technologies are becoming increasingly mature; the scale of the energy storage market is rapidly expanding; the energy storage industry chain is becoming more and more comprehensive; energy storage policies are strongly promoted, and the capital market is very active. He introduces the progress of energy storage technology R&D and application in 2022, summarizes the installed scale of various new energy storage technologies, key technology R&D, etc., and predicts the installed scale of energy storage under different scenarios.
Distinguished experts present insightful R&D of energy storage technologies and policies. They are WANG Chengshan, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering/Professor of Tianjin University; LIU Yongqi, Director of Pumped Storage and New Energy Division of State Grid Corporation; WU Jiamao, Senior Vice President of Sunshine Power; Pablo HEVIA-KOCH, Director of Renewable Energy Integration and Secure Power Division of International Energy Agency; ZHENG Yaodong, Senior Member of Southern Power Grid Corporation; and DING Yulong, Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering / Tenured Professor of University of Birmingham.
YUE Fen, Deputy Secretary General and Research Director of China Energy Storage Alliance, released the DataLink Global Energy Storage Database and 2022 Annual Energy Storage Data at the Summit Forum. Members of the fourth executive council of China Energy Storage Alliance made a collective appearance, in which Professor CHEN Haisheng was elected as the President of the Alliance for a new term. The 6th and 7th International Energy Storage Innovation Competition Awards Ceremony was then held to recognize the winning companies and individuals who have made significant contributions to the fields of energy storage technology innovation and business model promotion over the past year.
The Conference also set up more than twenty theme forums, summit forums, energy storage industry leaders closed-door meeting. More than 200 energy storage industry experts brought wonderful reports.
During the Conference, the "Energy Storage Frontier Technology Conference (ESFTC)" was organized. While, the launching ceremony of " Long-Duration Energy Storage Technology Special Committee of China Energy Storage Alliance " was held in the ESFTC opening ceremony. Professor CHEN Haisheng, Academician YANG Yusheng, Vice President YU Zhenhua, Professor LI Xianfeng and Professor WANG Zhifeng completed the launching ceremony on behalf of the special committee.
