Research Fields

Large-scale energy storage technology research and development, in particular, advanced compressed air energy storage (A-CAES) technology, largescale cold storage and heat storage technologies, flywheel energy storage technology, and novel pumped hydroelectric storage technology, etc.

Team Building

The center currently has 63 employees (including 9 Professors, 18 Associate Professors, 3 members of CAS “Hundred Talents Plan”, 1 member of the first batch of Outstanding Youth “Ten-thousand Talents Plan” selected by the CPC Organization Department, 1 member of the first batch of Middle-Young leaders in scientific and technological innovation) and 53 graduate students (including 12 joint training students), i.e. 18 doctoral and 35 postgraduate students.

Major Achievements:

In terms of fundamental research, an optimization strategy based on corresponding-entropy and finite time/size and a probability-load factor coupling design method for complex variable operating conditions have been proposed for CAES systems. Research has been conducted on non-steady-state characteristics of compressor under variable operating conditions and nonsteady-state flow characteristics between rotor tip clearances. Studies have also been conducted on non-steady-state internal flow fields, dynamic response characteristics, and control methods for expander.

 In terms of key technologies, a coupling operation method for 10 MW advanced compressed air energy storage system and power grid scheduling has been developed. The commissioning and performance testing of the core components of the 100 MW compressed air energy storage system, including the compression process, the heat storage and heat exchangers, and the expansion process, have been completed, and the system has been connected to the grid and operated with the grid. The overall design of a 300 MW compressed air energy storage system and the detailed design of the core components, including the compressor, heat storage and heat exchanger, and expander, have been completed, and components are under manufacturing.

In terms of integrated demonstrations, the 10 MW CAES project in Feicheng, Shandong Province has successfully passed the acceptance inspection of the National Key Research and Development Plan, achieving commercial operation of the demonstration power plant. The Zhangbei 100 MW demonstration project has successfully achieved power generation and grid connection. The design work for the world's first 300 MW expander has been completed. The natural gas pressure reduction power generation project in Zibo city has achieved grid connection and has passed the performance acceptance inspection by the National Development and Reform Commission and the State Grid.

Regarding the promotion of technological industrialization, the financing of the 100 MW compressed air energy storage industrialization company has been completed, totaling 5.3 billion CNY, with a cumulative financing of 1.18 billion CNY. The Zhangjiakou project has received a total repayment of 244 million CNY. The first 300 kW natural gas pressure reduction power generation system in Zibo city has been commissioned and put into operation. Zhongchu Guoneng (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd. has received honors and awards such as the TOP10 Innovative Energy Storage Technology Award at the 6th International Energy Storage Innovation Competition and one of the global 50 smartest companies in the world in 2021.

In terms of platform construction, supported by the Huairou Clean Energy Materials Testing, Diagnosis, and R&D Platform, the application for CNAS certification for the Energy Storage Measuring Center of Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences has been initiated. The detailed design, key equipment development, and procurement work for the Nanjing Future Energy Systems Research Institute's advanced 100 MW compressed air energy storage platform have been completed.

Technology Transfer

The team completed the financing of 530 million CNY for the industrialization of 100 MW compressed air energy storage, with a total financing of 1.18 billion CNY. The project located in Zhangjiakou received 244 million CNY in total; completed the commissioning and operation of the first 300 kW natural gas residual pressure power generation system in Zibo, Shandong Province; ZHONG-CHU-GUO-NENG (BEIJING) TECHNOLOGY CO.,LTD was honored as one of the Global 50 Smartest Companies in 2021 and awarded the energy storage technology innovation model TOP10 in the 6th International Energy Storage Innovation Competition 2022.

Patents and Paper

In 2021, 2 English monograph/chapter and 92 papers were published, 53 of which are indexed by SCI. We applied for 1 PCT with 1 authorized, 104 national invention patents with 27 authorized, 16 utility patents with 30 authorized, and 1 software copyright in China.

Awards

Advanced compressed air energy storage technology R&D and industrialization team won the 2022 Science & Technology for Development Promotion Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Advanced compressed air energy storage was granted the Golden Award of 49th International Exhibitions of Innovations of Geneva (49th Salon international des inventions).

International Cooperation and Exchanges

Under the support of the International Big Science Cultivation Program of Chinese Academy of Sciences and other projects, 1 international conference was hosted, and online system of International Energy Storage Alliance and Wechat official account were improved, providing the all-round service for energy storage.
