Projects and Major Achievements

This year we've successfully taken 5 national-grade major science and technology projects and sub-projects. 1 project belongs to NSFC-funded Basic Science Center Program “Ordered Conversion of Energy”. 3 projects belong to the following National Key R&D Program of China, “Key technology of distributed energy system with multi-complementary and efficient cascade utilization energy” “Research on theory and method of thermal cycle of coal-fired power generation under ultra-high parameters”.

In terms of distributed energy system direction, an integrated dehumidification and desalination-based prototype driven by waste heat has been built. The coastal test showed that the moist air with salt fog can reach a better state with the humidity down below 55% and the desalination rate reaching 70%. The technology program and feasibility study report of demonstration engineering based on the technology above have been completed and accredited. A new National Key R&D Program has been led to break some key technology on multi-complementary and efficient cascade utilization of energy. An active regulation method and key technology of distributed energy supply system have been invented to complete the objective funded by the 973 Project. Two new national standards for distributed energy involved by the institute have been promulgated and implemented.

On the solar thermochemical and the thermal power generation system integration, a universal solar simulator has been designed and built for both focused and quasi-collimated beams. The solar simulator can produce concentrated high-flux, medium-flux and non-concentrated quasi-collimated light with continuously adjustable power output (0.01~10000kW/m2). At 93% of rated power input, temperature at focal point reaches beyond 3017 °C. For a 4m×3m rectangular area illuminated by quasi-collimated light, the measured radiative flux, half divergence angle, and uniformity of the light are 0.94 kW/ m2, 1.3°, and 92%, respectively. The solar simulator provides a universal research platform for a wide range of solar energy technologies, such as solar thermal, solar thermochemical, solar photovoltaics and photocatalysis (with a minor upgrade of the spectrum). Compared to other solar simulators built by Switzerland, Japan and Australia, many performances are world-leading and advanced. For the solar PV-heat hybridization mechanism, we originally proposed a photovoltaic/thermochemical hybrid approach for cascading solar energy, correspondingly, innovatively built a 2kW prototype. Differing from international approaches, the prototype enables incident sunlight to be split before concentrated. In this case, the irreversible loss of full-spectrum solar energy would be expected to be reduced. In addition, technical design of 500kW solar thermochemical power generation pilot plant which will be built in the city of Zhangjiakou has been completed, achieving the solar-to-fuel conversion rate and solar-to-electrical efficiency of 60% and 20%, respectively.

In greenhouse gas control and multi-generation direction, research on mechanism, experiment and system integration around directional coal gasification of hydrocarbon components, chemical looping combustion, low energy consumption of CO2 capture and polygeneration technologies were carried out by the lab. The proposed “coal hydrocarbon gasification technology” can increase the efficiency of coal-derived SNG system to 65%. The experiment results show that the cold gas efficiency of the new hydrocarbon gasification technology is 4-6 percentage points higher than that of the current advanced Shell gasification technology, 6-10 percentage points than that of the GE gasification technology. The thermal efficiency is 8-10 percentage points higher than Shell gasification technology, 6-10 percentage points than GE gasification technology. A 30 kWth gasification and CO2 enrichment pilot plant and platform has been built, which can provide test verification for the method above.

Technology Transfer

This year, two new contracts have been signed. One was signed with China National Nuclear Corporation to study the feasibility analysis of supercritical carbon dioxide power generation system based on sodium cooled fast reactor. The other was signed with China Huaneng Group CO., LTD to strengthen cooperation in carbon dioxide capture and storage. Meanwhile, the lab continues to cooperate with Huadian Electric Power Research Institute to commercialize the theory of cascade utilization of energy in the fields of electric power industry and distributed energy technology.

Patents and Paper

In year 2018, the lab published 57 academic papers, including 39 papers indexed by Science Citation Index (SCI); submitted 12 new patent applications, and was granted 14 patents of invention.
