Research Field

Large-scale energy storage technology research and development, in particular, advanced compressed air energy storage (A-CAES) technology, largescale cold storage and heat storage technologies, flywheel energy storage technology, and novel pumped hydroelectric storage technology, etc.

Team Building

Currently, there are 66 research staff, including 11 Professors and 20 Associate Professors. One Professor is selected as "Hundred Talents Program" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and one is a candidate of "Hundred Talents Program" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. There are 84 graduate students, including 25 doctoral students and 59 postgraduate students.

Project and Major Achievement

The center is working on 77 projects, and 26 new projects of various types were granted in 2023.

In terms of basic research, unsteady characteristics of compressed air energy storage systems, compressors and expanders have been carried out. The formation and evolution of the thermoclines inside the graded phase-change material coupled adsorption packed bed, the heat storage/release operation characteristics of the phase-change material packed bed, and the heat transfer characteristics and mechanism of the supercritical nitrogen flow near the proposed critical point in the micro-channel were revealed. Thermoelectric insitu direct one-piece measurement instruments, wearable thermoelectric fabrics and flexible distributed stress-strain fiber sensors were developed. The first dual energy storage mechanism oxygen ion intercalation type supercapacitor was designed and developed.

In terms of key technologies, the structural optimization design of the allcentrifugal compressor for 300 MW compressed air energy storage system, rotor dynamics of the long axis system and cylinder strength calibration have been completed, which are being manufactured. The structural design of axial-centrifugal combined compressor for 300 MW compressed air energy storage system, and design and manufacturing of axial flow compressor part were completed. The manufacture, integration and test of expander for 300 MW CAES system were completed, which was selected as one of the major scientific and technological innovations in the year of 2023 by the National Energy Administration and Guangming Daily. The control system debugging and low-speed test of 300 kW/10 MJ flywheel energy storage have been completed. The overall system design, flywheel parts design and manufacturing of 300 kW/320 MJ flywheel system have been completed.

In terms of integration demonstration, we completed the scheduling and operation of Zhangbei 100 MW compressed air energy storage demonstration project, which has successfully passed the acceptance of Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Development and Reform Commission. The development and procurement of Nanjing 100 MW compressed air energy storage system expander and heat exchanger equipment has been completed, which has arrived at the site of shipment. The civil site construction of the world's first 300 MW compressed air energy storage demonstration power plant as well as the processing and commissioning of key system components have been completed. These components have been delivered to the site. The manufacturing and engineering design of key components of 20 MWh new type of packed bed thermal energy storage system have been completed. The application of 500 kW/50 kWh flywheel energy storage has been completed, which successfully passed the acceptance of the pilot project of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In terms of platform construction, based on the complete instrumentation conditions in Huairou District, the application for the establishment of "Energy Storage Testing Center of Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences" has passed the evaluation by the Institute. The manufacturing of the key equipment of 100 MW advanced compressed air energy storage system managed by Energy Storage R&D Center of ZhongkeNanjing Institute of Future Energy Systems has been completed.

Technology Transfer

We completed the listing and transfer of 99.76 million CNY worth of equity shares of the Institute; the construction of 100 MW compressed air energy storage system in Zhongning, Ningxia Province and 300 MW compressed air energy storage system in Xinyang, Henan Province has started; We completed 2 natural gas residual pressure turbine project applications and startup; 5 projects led by the team were selected as "New Energy Storage Pilot Demonstration Projects" by the National Energy Administration. Zhongchu Guoneng (Beijing) Technology Co. Ltd. won prizes including the first prize of "Maker Beijing 2023" innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the 7th International Energy Storage Innovation Competition "2023 Energy Storage Unicorn of Tomorrow", "2023 China's Future Unicorns TOP100", "Top10 Carbon Neutral Companies with the Most Investment Value", etc.

Patent and Paper

In 2023, 4 English monographs/chapters and 83 papers were published, 50 of which are indexed by SCI. A total of 67 national invention patents (48 authorized), 10 utility model patents (18 authorized) and 3 software copyright authorizations were applied for. Four standards, including 2 national standards were published.

International Cooperation and Exchange

Under the support of the International Big Science Cultivation Program of Chinese Academy of Sciences and other projects, 2 international conferences were held. A cooperation agreement between the institute and the University of Queensland was signed.
