Research Field

Large-scale energy storage technology research and development, in particular, advanced compressed air energy storage (A-CAES) technology, largescale cold storage and heat storage technologies, flywheel energy storage technology, and novel pumped hydroelectric storage technology, etc.

Team Building

Currently, there are 63 research staff, including 12 professors, 20 associate professors. There are 97 graduate students, including 27 doctoral students and 70 postgraduate students.

Project and Major Achievement

The center currently has 97 ongoing research projects, including 25 newly granted projects in 2024.

In basic research:
The unsteady characteristics of compressed air energy storage (CAES) systems was revealed. Research on the thermodynamic performance of variable-speed CAES systems, flow loss mechanisms and stress characteristics of compressors, and variable operating conditions and unsteady flow characteristics within expanders was conducted. Energy loss mechanisms across processes in coupled thermal storage and new energy systems, along with multi-scale flow-thermal-stress characteristics and influence mechanisms within high-efficiency heat storage/exchanger swere uncovered. An in-situ measurement method for thermoelectric properties of sheets, fibers, and thin films based on harmonic detection was proposed. The preparation of flexible thermoelectric devices, supercapacitors, and hydrogen storage fibers was achieved.

In key technologies:
Breakthroughs in core technologies for the 300 MW-level advanced CAES system were made, including wide-load compressors, high-load expanders, single-unit 8000 m³ thermal storage devices, and array heat exchangers; Prototypes of key components for the 300 MW-level system were developed. Key challenges in MW-scale magnetically suspended inertia flywheel system design, flywheel bodies and bearings were overcame.

In integrated demonstration:
The world's first 300 MW-level advanced CAES demonstration power station was constructed, and grid-connected operation was successfully achieved. Process design and engineering design for a highly efficient and flexible dualsupply electro-thermal system was completed, and the main equipment for demonstration systems including a 20 MWh novel spray-type packed bed was installed. The installation of main equipment for the 500 kW natural gas pressure energy recovery turbine demonstration system was finished.

In platform construction:
The “Energy Storage Testing Center of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences” leveraging Huairou's comprehensive instrumentation facilities was established. The development of key equipment for the “100 MW-level Advanced CAES System” at the Energy Storage R&D Center of the Nanjing Institute of Future Energy Systems was completed.

Technology Transfer

Three projects were selected for the National Energy Administration's Fourth Catalog of Major First-of-its-Kind (FOAK) Energy Technology Equipment. Five demonstration projects were included in the National Energy Administration's Pilot Demonstration List for New Energy Storage Projects. ZHONG-CHU-GUO-NENG (BEIJING) TECHNOLOGY Co. Ltd. received
the following honors: “2024 China Future Unicorn Top 100”, “2024 China Long-Duration Energy Storage Pioneer Enterprise Award”, “Top 30 Young Energy Entrepreneurs in Innovation and Entrepreneurship”.

Patent and Paper

In 2024, 1 English monographs/chapters and 72 papers were published, 45 of which are indexed by SCI. A total of 30 national invention patents (43 authorized), 3 utility model patents (3 authorized) and 1 software copyright authorizations are applied for. Two standards, including 1 national standards are published.

Award

■ Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize of Chinese Academy of Sciences
■ First Prize for Energy Innovation of China Energy Research Society

International Cooperation and Exchange

Two international conferences on energy storage were hosted, calling on international energy storage professionals to gather together and discuss energy storage technologies; 7 international visitors for academic exchange were received.
