On the morning of September 3, the Institute held the 2026 Opening Ceremony for Graduate Students. The event was attended by Academician Jin Hongguang, Director Chen Haisheng, Deputy Director Sui Jun, Zhang Xiaoguang (Director of the Human Resources Department), Zhu Canhuan (Deputy Director of the Party Committee Office), Wang Qing (Secretary of the Youth League Committee), all faculty members from the Education Department, and over 130 new students from the 2026 cohort. The ceremony was presided over by Lu Yan, Director of the Education Department.
Academician Jin Hongguang delivered an address at the ceremony. He pointed out that the graduate stage represents a turning point where students shift from absorbing knowledge to exploring the unknown, and that research outcomes during this period will directly impact their academic confidence and future career trajectories. He emphasized that graduate research should focus on the future rather than textbooks; regardless of the scale of the results, students must break through existing knowledge frameworks to conduct original explorations that satisfy both academic value creation and personal capability improvement. He warned that perfunctory efforts would have lasting negative effects. He advised students to improve the effectiveness of communication with supervisors and team members to avoid deviations in research direction, and to maintain an open and enterprising attitude—avoiding closing the door to innovation due to objective difficulties—to cultivate resilience in scientific research. Finally, he stressed the importance of balanced physical and mental development, urging students to pay attention to their mental health and physical fitness alongside their academic pursuits to build a foundation for a sustainable research career.
Chen Haisheng, on behalf of all faculty, staff, and students of the Institute, extended a warm welcome to every new student. He noted that their arrival coincides with the Institute's 70th anniversary. He stated that they are entering not just an ordinary research institution, but a national strategic scientific force with 70 years of glorious tradition and a mission to serve the country. He expressed hope that the students would quickly integrate into this family, understand its history, inherit its spirit, and shoulder its mission. Using the concept of "Entropy," he offered three hopes for all new students:
Practice self-discipline: Use "negative entropy" to combat disorder and become the managers of your own lives. Turn every experiment, every paper, and every discussion into "ordered energy" injected into your research life, making self-discipline the solidest cornerstone of your career.
Embrace challenges: Combat "entropy increase" with action and become pioneers on the path of research. Set ambitious ideals, actively choose difficult topics, tackle real problems, and challenge directions that make you "uncomfortable"—as these are the areas where you will grow the fastest.
Stay open: Embrace interdisciplinary integration with "entropy change" and become innovative explorers. A truly excellent researcher must be an "open system"—constantly exchanging energy, information, and ideas with the outside world to generate inspiration through intersection and achieve leaps through fusion.
Sui Jun introduced to all new students the various honors and awards won by the Institute's supervisors and graduate students during the 2025-2026 academic year, encouraging them to emulate the virtuous, strive for excellence, and meet a better version of themselves at the Institute.
Zhou Zhijie, the representative of the new students, also took the stage to share his thoughts on the beginning of the semester. On behalf of all 2026 freshmen, he extended his warmest congratulations and heartfelt gratitude to the Institute for its 70 years of heritage and perseverance, and offered his sincerest thanks to the teachers for their dedicated cultivation. He shared three points of mutual encouragement with his fellow students: first, to embrace challenges with perseverance; second, to integrate disciplines and dare to innovate; and third, to keep "national affairs" in heart and shoulder "national responsibilities." On behalf of all new students, he solemnly promised to uphold the Institute's motto of "Excellence in Thermophysics, Gathering Energy with Integrity," hone solid theoretical foundations, delve into technology, solve problems, stay grounded, live up to their youth, and meet the future with substantial achievements.
The opening ceremony concluded successfully amidst warm applause, with the new students embarking on their new journey with hope and anticipation. Every member of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics looks forward to writing a new chapter of scientific research together with the new students and contributing to the nation's technological progress!
