Research Fields and Orientations

Research Fields: Oriented towards advanced light-duty gas turbine technology research and development (R&D) and system integration: fundamental research of small turbofan engines and vehicle gas turbines; key technology R&D; system integrated innovation and new product development.

Research directions: Aero-engine structural design and system integration, and structural design and system integration of vehicle gas turbines.

Scientific research instruments and equipment

The high-altitude test facility, with a low temperature and low pressure environment, conducts aero-engine research at high altitude, filling this gap in China. The test bench consists of air compressors, high altitude chambers (simulated altitude environment), heat exchangers (to ensure progression, exhaust temperatures), air pumps (to generate the low pressure environment), expanders (for low temperature simulation), simulation test systems (data acquisition) etc. This test bench is used to study the reliability of fuel systems, oil systems and air systems in high altitude environments, and also to test the ignition and flameout performance in high altitude environments, as well as thrust transients. The high-altitude test facility could conduct turbojet testing in 2016 and the turbofan testing in 2017.

Major Achievements of 2014

In fundamental and key technology research, studies were conducted on the complex flow mechanisms in highly-loaded low pressure turbines, aggressive inter-turbine transition duct and lobed mixer exhaust systems. In addition, breakthroughs were achieved in mixed flow + centrifugal compressor and hierarchical partially premixed combustion chamber design and key technology.

Organization and Personnel

The Laboratory currently has 65 employees, including 9 research officers (2 from the Hundred Talent Plan, 1 from the Recruitment Program of Global Youth Experts, 1 Outstanding Technologist, and 1 Military Field Outstanding Technical Personnel), 20 associate researchers/senior engineers, and 34 graduates.

Transfer and Industrialization of Technological Achievements

On September 16th, 2014, Institute of Engineering Thermophysics CAS, Shaanxi Ligeance Mineral Resources Co. Ltd. and the government of Chengdu Shuangliu reached an agreement in a joint venture company and cooperation projects.

In March 2014, Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shandong Mining Machinery Group Co., Ltd. set up a joint venture company: Beijing Zhongkedaizong Aviation Science and Technology Limited Liability Company. The company is mainly engaged in the R&D, production and sale of aero-engines.

Supported by the Light Power for National Defense Science and Technology Key Laboratory, CAS, the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics CAS, Qingdao City Science and Technology Bureau and the Qingdao City Hall, a branch of Institute of Engineering Thermophysics CAS in Qingdao, namely the "Qingdao Light-Duty Gas Turbine Institute," was established.

The company, CAS-Hefei Micro Gas Turbine Research Institute Co., Ltd., was established in order to promote the development and industrialization of micro gas turbines.

Patents and paper

Altogether 55 papers and conference papers were published in 2014 including 18 indexed by SCI and 16 by EI. 15 invention patents were applied for and 3 of them were authorized.

International Cooperation and Exchanges

The Gas Turbine Lab and Kamov (a Russian rotorcraft manufacturing company) launched a collaboration project on key technology research for civil small turbofan engines. Six Kamov technical experts were invited for one week technical exchanges, focusing on the analysis of civil small turbofan engine design methodology and technical characteristics.
