Research Fields and Orientations

Research Fields: Fundamental research and R&D of advanced energy and power transformation technology and systems.

Research Directions: Dense transport bed gasification; heavy gas turbines; advanced power cycle and energy & power systems; energy efficiency/conservation and environmental protection; energy science and technology innovation strategy and policy.

Scientific research instruments and equipment

Completed the construction and installation of all equipment for the pressurized dense phase transport bed gasification 24 t/d pilot system and the gas turbine combustor high-pressure testing facility. Since its electric connection in April 2014, and was made ready for use with the completed commissioning of No. 1 and No. 2 circulating water stations, the high-pressure water station, the washing water station, the chemical water station, the instrument air, the factory air, the reciprocating air compressor station, the air compressors, the diesel tank zone, and No. 1 and No. 2 boilers. The air supercharger, the anti-fire water station, the high-pressure nitrogen station, the high-pressure oxygen station, the pulverized coal preparation system, the natural gas station, and the DCS system were also commissioned.

Major Achievements of 2014

Completed construction of the unique large-scale full-size full-temperature high-pressure test platform for multi-fuel gas turbine combustors. Performance tests can be carried out for combustors fueled with diesel, natural gas, low heating value fuel gases (syngas, blast furnace gas, hydrogen-rich fuel etc.), where the air flow can reach 4MPa pressure, 15 kg/s flow rate, and 450 preheating temperature. Full-size full-temperature high-pressure tests for R0110 turbine combustor fueled with medium and low heating value gases were completed on this test platform.

Organization and Personnel

Currently, the center has 54 employees, including 7 research professors, 19 associate research professors, 1 person from the Thousand Talent Program, 2 persons from the CAS Hundred Talent Program, and 38 graduate students.

Professor XIAO Yunhan is: a committee member of Coal Chemistry of China Coal Association; a member of EPSRC Peer Review College, UK; executive director of China Energy Research Association; deputy head, Thermodynamics and Engineering Application of China Energy Research Association; general secretary, Beijing Society of Engineering Thermophysics; deputy editor in chief, International Journal of Thermal and Fluid Science; member of editorial board, China Journal of Thermal Power; member of editorial board, Coal Journal.

Professor LIN Feng is the Awards Committee chair of the ASME Model and Intelligent Systems Committee, and international director of Gas Turbine Society of Japan (GTSJ).

Transfer and Industrialization of Technological Achievements

Signed three corporation project contracts totaling 8.66M CNY in 2014.

The Center worked together with Jiangsu province to advance the commissioning of the "High-Efficiency and Low-Carbon Gas Turbine Research Facility," a national major science and technology infrastructure project.

The Center and the Lianyungang High-tech Zone signed an agreement on strengthening comprehensive cooperation to accelerate the development of the high-tech zone and developing its clean energy industry and furthering the national coastal development strategy.

Patents and paper

55 papers were published throughout the year including 12 indexed by SCI, 11 by EI, and 14 presentations at international conferences; 6 invention patents were applied for, 5 invention patents were authorized, and 2 utility model patents were authorized.

International Cooperation and Exchanges

The Center is collaborating with foreign organizations including the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Harvard University, Virginia Tech, Utah State University, Tufts University, Global Environmental Institute, Natural Resources Defense Council, The Energy Foundation, Blue Moon Foundation, and others to build joint laboratories and R&D bases.

In 2014, more than 10 researchers attended important international academic meetings, including ASME Turbo Expo and Asian Congress on Gas Turbines, and presented 14 papers. Prof. LIN Feng, ZHANG Hongwu, and Associate Professor Fang Aibing each chaired technical sessions. Professor CHEN Jingyi presided over the closing session.

The Center invited Prof. Macro P. Schoen as a distinguished researcher to Center for exchange and teaching. The US side invited researchers from the Center to the United States for academic exchanges, and sent a student to study at the Center. DU Juan, associate professor, won the Humboldt Scholarship (Germany) and went to University of Hanover for a year of work and study. Representatives from Arkema (France), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (US), and EDF (France) visited our center and discussed potential cooperation.
