On the 28th of April, 2010, when Yang Jun, the director of the Hangzhou Municipal Construction Committee, pressed a button, it successfully ignited the model project of using a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) for integrated sludge incineration located at Qige Sewage Treatment Plant in Hangzhou. This system is able to treat 100 tons of de-watered sludge of a 78% moisture content per day, occupying 5364 square meters. This project adopts the circulating fluidized bed technology for the integrated incineration of sludge, which was developed by the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics (IET) after a six-year long effort. The technology combines drying with the incineration of sludge in a single piece of equipment.

This is a model project in Phase III of Hangzhou Qige Sewage Treatment Plant. With a total investment of RMB 1.43 billion, Phase III is a super-huge domestic urban sewage treatment infrastructure project. It is able to treat 600,000 tons of sewage per day, which increases the amount of sludge produced to 1200 tons. In order to treat sludge appropriately, theHangzhou Municipal Government has investigated various sludge disposal technologies since 2005. They decided to build a 100t/day CFB for integrated sludge incineration, providing a technological and engineering model for subsequent large-scale sludge incineration equipment. The Hangzhou Municipal Government paid great attention to this project. Jianting Zhang, the vice Mayor of Hangzhou, visited the project scene personally on April 30th, only 2 days after the system was put into operation.

This is also a model project of "the key technological research and demonstration project of municipal sewage sludge reduction, harmlessness and comprehensive utilization" subject, which is the national "Eleventh Five-Year" science and technology major project for water pollution control and management undertaken by our institute. Hangzhou consequently became the "Eleventh Five-Year" model city of sludge incineration. With the commissioning and operation of this model project, CFB technology for integrated sludge incineration has made the transition from laboratory research to an engineering installation. It will not only provide a brand new progress route and technological support for sludge treatment in China, but also comprehensively enhance the level of technology and research capabilities to burn the sludge in the future.

Our institute will improve the process, optimize the system design and enlarge the capacity gradually on the basis of the operation condition of Hangzhou Qige 100t/day CFB for integrated sludge incineration demonstration project.
