The year 2008 was a year with the global economy changed dramatically. It was an extremely unusual year for this country too. The functions and questions about energies seem especially outstanding in the disaster reliefs and the financial turbulences. The Institute of Engineering Thermophysics is devoted to the significant mission of the scientific and technological research and development (R&D) in the fields of energy, power and environment. The feelings for the responsibilities have strengthened our resolutions of making more contributions to energy courses in this country.

Director of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics Wei Qin

The year 2008 was the 10th anniversary for the implement of the knowledge innovation projects in our Academy. It was the Administrative Year of our Institute. In this year, we formed a strategic and planning draft for the development in science and technology in the following 5 through 10 years to define the key directions of the research and development. We have been advancing in seeking for scientific research tasks, strengthening scientific and technical innovations, deepening the mechanism and system reforms, perfecting rules and regulations, attracting and training youths and professionals, building the scientific research bases and stimulating the academic atmosphere!

In 2008, the staffs at the Institute made outstanding achievements in competing for the research projects and successfully obtained two key projects and twelve normal projects of the National Natural Science Foundation. It was a historical break. In an 863 scientific research project, the key technologies and system for a heavy-duty gas turbine, we had two joint sub-projects with the cooperative institutions granted. We also made different progresses in such respects as the Academic important directional projects, civil projects, projects trusted by companies and international collaborative projects with total contracted funds of over a hundred million Renminbi yuans in 2008.

In this year, the Laboratory of Advanced Energy and Power and the Wind Energy Laboratory (jointly with the Institute of Electrical Engineering) at the Institute successfully passed the verifications for the key laboratories in the Chinese Academy of Sciences and broken the record of zero key laboratories at the Institute. The constructions of such scientific research platforms as these laboratories, the Intermediate Experimental Base in Langfang and the Center of Light Gas Turbine have set a solid foundation for the development of the Institute in the future.

In 2008, the research projects at the Institute were progressed smoothly. The research staffs in the Laboratory of Advanced Energy and Power have designed E-grade syn-gas spray nozzles for diluted diffusion combustors, and finished the construction and debugging of a D100 lab-scale gasification device with a transportation bed. The design results of IGCC/cogeneration systems have been incorporated into the technological scheme of the demonstration projects in Dongguan and Luan.

The research staffs in the Laboratory of Circulating Fluidized Bed have completed the demonstration of running a 200 MW grade ultrahigh-pressure re-heatable circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler without an external heat exchanger. The technological development of a 600 MW super-critical circulating fluidized bed boiler is going forward steadily.

The research staffs in the Laboratory of Propulsion and Power have setup a full three-dimensional design system for a two-stage centrifugal compressor and its system, and successfully developed an integrated cooling and thermal managing cupboard with 3000 Å microgrooves for a coal-fired power generator. The wind turbine blades with a power output of 2 MW independently designed by the Laboratory are under testing. The research staffs in the Laboratory of Energy Systems and Renewable Energy have established a relatively perfect theoretical frame for energy conversion of fuels with low-temperature solar energy and tentatively proposed technical maps for the greenhouse gas control suitable for the nation. They have invented a looped steam cooling structure suitable for the trailing edge of gas turbine blade and finished a conceptual design of a fully looped cooling of guide vanes in a gas turbine.

In 2008, a project at the Institute, the development and demonstration of efficient clean coal-based methyl alcohol and power co-generation, won the first Scientific and Technological Progress Award in Shandong Province (ranking the second organization). A team at the Institute, the project team for the pollution control and resource-like utilization of municipal waste of the Olympic Games, won the National Outstanding Team Award for Scientific and Technological Olympics.

In this year, the research staffs at the Institute submitted 43 applications for national patents including 39 for national patents for inventions. 24 patents for inventions and 12 patents for new applications have been approved. 254 papers written by researchers at the Institute have been published. Among them, 52 papers are indexed in the SCI and 144 papers are indexed in the EI.

The year 2009 is a key year to accomplish the scientific research tasks of the eleventh five-year plan. The Institute will catch up with the era, take the opportunities, adjust the overall strategy, concentrate the superior strengths at the Institute and join forces to assault fortified positions. For the national demands, we will start a series of perspective scientific research to offer scientific bases, technical supports and solutions for sustainable development in energy, power and environmental science and technology in our country to accomplish the responsibility and mission entrusted by our country.Visiting research professors at the Institute
