The Institute has been paying close attention to the strategic studies to lead and drive the scientific and technological development in the field of thermophysics. We have adjusted the strategic plans and disciplinary structures of the Institute along with the key national strategies of energy, power and environment to consolidate the front position of the Institute in the field of engineering thermophysics. The efforts have expanded the influence of the Institute in this field.
The 2008 Institutional Strategy Seminar
Strategic planning
The year 2008 was the Planning Year at the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics. In this year, all staffs at the Institute deeply thought and systematically investigated the future development of the Institute and implementations of the scientific research tasks in the twelfth five years. The strategy and the planning draft of the research and development in the six disciplines, clean coal, advanced combustion, light-duty gas turbine, mass and heat transfer, energy-conservation and emission-reduction, and renewable energies, at the Institute in the next five through ten years have been accomplished. The corresponding arrangements and institutional constructions have been finished.
At the end of the year, the Institute successfully organized a strategy and development meeting at the Institute attended by the scientific and technical associate seniors or above staffs and leaders in divisions. At the meeting, through the strategic studies and discussions at multi-levels, the attendees condensed the key directions of the development and strategic emphasis of the Institute, i.e., the research at the Institute is focused on energy and power, energy-conservation and emission-reduction, based on the theoretical research of the integrated systems and the turbo-machinery and concentrated on the technical development of the IGCC/cogeneration, circulating fluidized bed, light-duty gas turbines, renewable energies (solar energy and wind energy) and resource-like utilization of municipal waste.
Structural adjustments
In January 2008, the Laboratory of Advanced Energy and Power at the Institute successfully passed the verification for construction organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and become the first key Academic laboratory at the Institute. In December 2008, a proposal for the key Wind Energy Laboratory jointly with the Institute of Electrical Engineering was approved by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
At the beginning of 2008, in the Laboratory of Advanced Energy and Power, combined with the research strengths of other units in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, on the basis of the key technology of cogeneration/IGCC, a non-beneficial research center, the Center of Energy and Power (CEP) in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was founded. In October 2008, at the Institute the matrix-type Center of Light Gas Turbine was constructed. The establishment of the center has further condensed the disciplinary developing directions, strengthened the research in light-duty gas turbines and enhanced the demonstrations of the research achievements.
