By September, 2013, the number of postgraduate students reached 237, including 100 doctoral students, and 137 master’s students. Our institute was included in the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences “pilot unit for joint cultivation of doctor students” (there were 32 units in CAS included in this pilot project). The joint doctoral cultivation project by our institute and University of Science and Technology Beijing was approved; we were approved to jointly cultivate 10 talents, and the plan will be implemented by University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. We enrolled 33 doctor candidates and 45 master’s degree candidates in 2013.

In 2013, our institute still continued to carry forward reform for postgraduate education, and formed the constant meritocratic system of selecting winners of the “President Award” and various other title awards from the “Excellent Student” winners of University of CAS, then selecting winners of the “National Scholarship.” Our institute hosted the first selection for the “Annual Scholarship,” in which the candidates were recommended by labs/centers, with the winners accounting for 60% of the students, so as to further strengthen the role of the scholarship. Besides, we also continued to implement and constantly improved the uniform “assessment for successive master-doctor program” and mid-term assessment for doctor student” in our institute, and inspected the academic dissertations of all the students via our “inspection system of academic dissertation and academically dishonorable behavior,” so as to further improve the cultivation quality of the postgraduates.

The number of graduates in 2013 reached a record high, with the total number reaching 70, including 29 graduates with doctor degree and 41 graduates with master’s degree. The employment rate of the graduates continued “mid-term assessment for doctor student” in our institute, and inspected the academic dissertations of all the students via our “inspection system of academic dissertation and academically dishonorable behavior,” so as to further improve the cultivation quality of the postgraduates.

The number of graduates in 2013 reached a record high, with the total number reaching 70, including 29 graduates with doctor degree and 41 graduates with master’s degree. The employment rate of the graduates continued to keep at 100%, with major employers being: R&D institutions accounting for 34.3%, enterprises and public institutions accounting for 35.7%, higher education institutions accounting for 8.6%, further studying and go abroad accounting for 18.6%, and others accounting for 2.8%.

Various activities of Graduate Student Union, Graduate Student Party Branch and Youth League Committee were carried out flourishingly. In 2013, we organized and carried out a series of artistic and cultural activities, sports activities, as well as theme activities such as “May Fourth Youth Day”, “December 9th Movement” commemoration, “Teachers’ Day” and “Linking Love”, a volunteer group of the Graduate Party Branch. The academic activities in the institute were widely carried out by virtue of the platforms such as “Doctoral Forum”, “Academic Activity Month—Master’s Forum”, “Salvo on the Rostrum” and “Exploration Platform” etc. We also founded a mental-health counselor team and clarified its duties, thus further tending to the psychological and mental status of the postgraduates. On December, 20, the “Scientific Spirit and Humanity Attainment Lecture” invited Associate Professor Xu Kaiwen, General Supervisor of “Peking University Mental Health and Consultancy Center” to give a lecture on mental health to our institute, for the purpose of providing fine psychological counseling for the young scientific researchers and postgraduates in our institute.

In 2013, the postgraduates of the institute performed well in various types of evaluations and won many honors. Zhang Yuan and Sun Liuli won the “CAS President Award”, 10 students of Ouyang Ziqu et al. won the National Scholarship, 4 students of Zhang Yuan et al. won the “Wu Zhonghua Excellent Student Award”, Peng Shuo and Yu Wei won the scholarship of American Superconductor, Wu Haibo and Yan Yuejun won Beijing Excellent Graduate, OuyangZiqu won the “Bao Steel Excellent Student Award” and China Sciences Group Environmental Protection Scholarship, 44 postgraduates won the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences “Excellent Student Award” and 95 postgraduates won the “Annual Scholarship for Postgraduates in the Institute”.

In 2013, under the support of the Academic Forum of University of CAS, our institute hosted “Energy and Sustainable Development Forum of IET”, during which doctoral candidates from Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Institute of Mechanics, Institute of Process Engineering and Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion were invited to attend the presentation session. As selected by the assessment panel, 10 of the students won the forum’s various awards, of which doctor candidate Peng Shuo from our institute won the special award of excellent thesis, doctor candidate Nan Xi won first prize of excellent thesis, doctor candidate Zhang Yuan and Wu Haibo won second prize of excellent thesis.

In August, 2013, the 6th Evaluating Meeting of “WU Chunghua Award Funds” was convened in the institute. Professor Wang Moran from Tsinghua University, research professor Hao Yong from IET, Professor Liu Naian from University of Science and Technology of China, Professor Wang Xiaodong from North China Electric Power University won “WU Chunghua Award for Excellent Young Scholars”, 12 persons including Zhang Yuan won “Wu Zhonghua Excellent Student Award”, with the winners coming from IET, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Beijing University of Technology and South China University of Technology.
