Research fields
In the Laboratory, we mainly carry out the research and development (R&D) on clean utilizations of a variety of such fuels as coal, biomass and wastes. The research fields include theoretical and technological development of advanced combustion and gasification. The research for innovations is focused on the R&D of large-scale combustion with circulating fluidized bed (CFB), biomass combustion for power generation, sewage sludge incineration, and the pyrolysis and gasification with CFB.

Research directions
1. Research and applications of large-scale CFB combustion. We have engaged in the study of large-capacity and high-level parameterization techniques for CFB boilers. We have studied and developed CFB boilers with intellectual property rights for growing electrical power output of 50 MW, 150 MW, 200 MW and 600 MW. We have demonstrated technical and engineering projects and promoted the applications to technical products. We carry out experimental investigations of related technical features and establish the design platforms for large-scale CFB boilers.
2. Biomass combustion for power generation, and sewage sludge incineration and utilization. We investigate CFB combustion characteristics with various fuels and the device designs for incineration facilities and technically demonstrate the projects supported by the research in the Laboratory.
3. Pyrolysis and gasification with CFB. We investigate the process of pyrolysis and gasification of such volatile fuels as coal and biomass with CFB.

Main achievements and progresses in scientific research in 2008
A National Science and Technology Project in the Tenth Five-year Plan, the technology and demonstration of 200 MW circulating fluidized bed boilers, has successfully passed the final examination of the Ministry of Science and Technology. A technical demonstration project, 200 MW super-high-pressure re-heated circulating fluidized bed boilers without external heat exchangers, has firstly been accomplished in this country. A National Supportive Project for Science and Technology in the Eleventh Five-year Plan, 600 MWe supercritical circulating fluidized bed boiler, undertaken by the Laboratory is being proceeded very well on schedule and has passed the midterm examination of a specialist team and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The Laboratory continues advancing the research and technological development. The R&D in cooperation with domestic enterprises are being processed well. By cooperating with the Shanghai Boiler Works Co., Ltd., the technical research on a 600 MW Supercritical Circulating Fluidized Bed Boiler and a 300 MW subcritical Circulating Fluidized Bed Boiler are busily going on. Six cooperative contracts for concrete sub-projects involving the search for references, tests, calculations, designs and design software were signed in this year. A joint project with the Wuxi Huaguang Boiler Co., Ltd., a large-capacity circulating fluidized bed boiler, aiming at improving and perfecting the large-capacity circulating fluidized bed boiler, has been started.
As an expansion of applications of a circulating fluidized bed boiler, the R&D related to the direct biomass combustion for power generation and sewage sludge incineration are being progressed smoothly. The corncob combustion with a circulating fluidized bed boiler was put into operation in Jiuquan, Gansu Province in October 2008. The preset content for a principle study of the sticky characteristics and applications of biomass combustion funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and a project of knowledge innovations at the Institute has been accomplished. To demonstrate the technology of the integrated sewage sludge incineration, the Laboratory is building an integrated circulating fluidized bed boiler with sewage sludge incineration of 100 tons per day at the Qige Sewage Treatment Plants in Hangzhou.
An international cooperative project, the Verification Test for N2O Reduction and the N2O Emission Test in Circulating Fluidized Bed Boilers, has successfully been completed and obtained favorable comments."
