(Joint) Key Laboratory of Wind Energy Utilization
Chinese Academy of Sciences
Overall Introduction
In December 2008, the Laboratory of Wind Energy Utilization jointly proposed by the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics and the Institute of Electrical Engineering in the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been approved by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and established.
The following is the mission, current academic status, trends of development and prospects of applicationsfor constructing thiskey laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The Institute of Engineering Thermophysics and the Institute of Electrical Engineering in the Chinese Academy of Sciences aretwo of the backbone instituteson the base of innovations in the field of advanced energy. The two institutes have jointly constructedthe Key Laboratory of wind Energy utilization, took the respective advantages of technology at the two institutes and create a strong technical union. The Laboratory is oriented with the needs of the national energy strategy, commits the original strategic high-tech innovations, carries out the design, testing, fault diagnosis and remote monitoring of power generators with wind turbines, and gradually forms integrated cross-multi-disciplinary fields of wind turbine aerodynamics, material mechanics, structural dynamics, power electronics and electric power transmission, electrical mechanical technology, control theory, detection, pattern-recognition and intelligent systems, and communications and information systems. We involve both theoretical and experimental studies, highlighting the respective disciplinary characteristics and comprehensive advantages. The Laboratory will be built into an international first-class laboratory and important research base for wind power technology, play an important role in promoting technological progresses, core competitiveness and enhancement of energy levels in wind energy industry in China, provide an open public technical service platform to domestic manufacturers, and provide China with an important scientific and theoretical basis for independent research and development in large-scale wind turbines.
Goals for research and development
1. The main research in the Laboratory includes the design, manufacturing and testing techniques of large-scale and super-large-scale wind turbine blades, control technologies in large-scale wind turbines, and evaporative cooling, inverter technology, variable pitch technology, remote monitoring, and ground-based experiments and detection in large-scale wind turbines.
2. The recent research focus of the Laboratory is the design, development and production of large-size wind turbine bladesto establish and improve the design and detection systems for wind turbine blades and basic research, industrial applications and optimization of a 1.5 MW or more high-power converter and electric variable pitch control system, to construct an experimental platform for a large ground-based wind power transmission system, to establish and improve the design and testing system for an electrical control in wind turbines, to perform the development and actual running tests for a 1 MW and 2 MW asynchronous evaporative cooled wind turbines and permanent magnet direct-driven evaporative cooled wind turbine, and to carry out research on some basic problems in energy absorption mechanism and aeroelastic stability in large-scale wind turbine blades and to construct a database of airfoil profiles of wind turbine blades.
3. The long-term objectives for research and development are to be a main representative of China in the international community in the field of wind power generation, to take a nation-wide leading position in the research, importance of research tasks and contribution to the country,to train, attract and unite a group of high-level scientificand technologicaltalents and leader-type scientists, to have a high-level well-structured research team, equipped with advanced scientific research equipments and supporting conditions, to bea bridge and link of a basic research and industrial development in wind power applications, to effectively improve the conversion of wind energy in industriesand to comprehensively upgrade Chinesecompetiveness of the wind energy industry in the international market.
Basis, results and level of research
The Laboratory is a unit with the currently widest professional coverage in the research of wind power, and possessesstrong scientific research strengths and bases in China. The achievements in the industrialization and applications of scientific and technological results are remarkable. The Laboratory leads to the national research and development of products with independent intellectual property right, has assumed 17 such research projects as the 863 projects, state scientific and technological supportive projects and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation in the past five yearswith a total funds of 80 million yuans, applied 18patents, 65 scientific articles published andtwomonographspressed. On this basis the Laboratory has accomplished a number of such achievements as the three-dimensional shaping of a 1.5MW pre-bent and pre-twisted wind turbine blades, the soft-parallel-grid control law and two-speed motor switch control of a 600kW stall-type wind turbine, the operation control and fail-safety control of a 750kW stall-type wind turbine, the optimal operation rules, control and optimization of a 1.5 MW variable-speed constant-frequency (VSCF) wind turbine.
Training of research teams and personnel
In the Laboratory a high-level research team with strong technical strengths is established in the field of wind turbines. There are 53 permanent researchers, inclusively of 2 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 13 advisors ofgraduate students for doctoral degrees, and 16 senior researchers. There are 39 visiting researchers, inclusively of 1 post-doctoral research fellow, 27 graduate students for doctoral degrees, and 11 graduate students for Master's degrees. This mobile team in the Laboratory is also an important force in scientific research.
A recommended director of the Laboratory,Research Professor Honghua Xu, isan associate director of the Institute of Electrical Engineering in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an expert in the 863 expert group in the subject of sustainable energy,a committee member of the National Expert Advisory Committee on Energy, and an expert of the National Tenth Five-Year 863 experts in the subject of sustainable energy.
A recommended director of the Academic DegreeCommittee,Research Professor Jianzhong Xu, is anAcademician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an outstanding physicist in thermal engineering, a memberof the National Natural Science Prize Committee, the board chairman of the Chinese Association of Engineering Thermophysics.
Research conditions
1. The Institute of Electrical Engineering and Institute of Engineering Thermophysics in the Chinese Academy of Sciences have established experimental platforms for control system of wind turbines and measurements of full-scale wind turbine blades, and acquired a large number of experimental devices. The equipments and devices in the Laboratory reach a domestic leading level.
2. The Laboratory specifically set up a laboratory for the control of wind turbines, experiments of converters, and blade design and development. The area of the laboratory is about 400 square meters. The area of the offices is approximately 600 square meters. The experimental space in Baoding, Hebei Province is currently more than 5,000 square meters. The environment is very predominant, convenient and suitable for important and significant research projects.
