Research Fields

Fundamental research, R&D of advanced energy and power conversion technology and system.

Research Directions:

1. Dense Transport Bed Gasification

2. Heavy-duty Gas Turbine

3. Advanced Power Cycle and Energy & Power System

4. Energy Saving and Environment Protection

5. Energy Science and Technology Innovation Strategy and Policy

Team Building

Currently, the center has 27 employees, including 5 research professors, 9 associate research professors, 2 professors of CAS Hundred Talent Program; 31 graduate students including 12 pursuing a doctorate and 19 pursuing a Master’s degree; 1 post-doctor.

The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences granted Doctor degree to two students and Master degree to five students in 2017.

Projects and Major Achievements

The center undertook a Youth 973 program project, named "The Fundamental Research on Gas Turbine Efficient, Clean, Mild Combustion Mechanism and Combustor". The National Development and Reform Commission approved the national major science and technology infrastructure project "High-Efficiency and Low-Carbon Gas Turbine Research Facility". Through competition, the center has undertaken one of the major basic research projects of the national "Aviation Engines and Heavy Gas Turbines" and participated in one project.

We conducted experimental research on the influences of pressure and temperature on gas-solid flow character at the pilot-scale transport gasifier with a capacity of 24TPD and validated the scale-up rules of structure and control from cold-state device and 5TPD pressurized hot-state device to 24TPD pilot platform. We tested the impacts of pressure, temperature, circulating ratio, air coal ratio and steam coal ratio on the performance and technical indicators of the gasifier. The results have shown that the transport gasification technology has advantages of wide regulation range, high gasification intensity and excellent performance, especially suitable to the efficient conversion of low rank coal. The performance can reach the international level of similar technologies.

We conducted research on natural gas fired combustion chamber design with low NOx emissions and firstly completed the development of natural gas fueled heavy-duty gas turbine combustion chamber prototype with class B parameters and low emissions. The power plant has installed the prototype combustor on the gas turbine and has been ready to commissioning.

Technology Transfer

The center signed 1 corporation project with Guodian Environmental Protection Research Institute, with total contract amount of CNY 480000 in 2017 and started the analysis of yellow smoke produced during gas turbine starting process and axial classification combustion characteristics.

The center worked together with Jiangsu province, Lianyungang city and Shanghai city to promote the application of the national major science and technology infrastructure project "High-Efficiency and Low-Carbon Gas Turbine Research Facility". The National Development and Reform Commission approved the project proposal on October 26, 2017.

Patents and Paper

Throughout the year, 23 papers were published including 7 indexed by SCI, 4 by EI; 3 invention patents were applied for, 1 invention patent was authorized, 2 utility model patents were authorized, and 5 software copyrights were authorized.

Awards

Professor Xiao Yunhan is Member of the EPSRC Peer Review College, UK.

International Cooperation and Exchanges

The center continued to promote substantial cooperation with US members of U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center on Advanced Coal Technology Consortium (CERC-ACTC) and of U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center on Energy and Water Track (CERC-WET), Laurence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

The center participated 2 international cooperation projects supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, called "Carbon Capture, Storage, Utilization, Demonstration and New Generation of Technology Development" and "Key Technologies of Energy and Water Bond and Efficient Green Utilization" respectively. Joint team carried out research on capture-ready gasification technology, efficient and water-saving IGCC/IGFC power plants, water and heat simultaneous recovery technology. The researcher from the center reported research progress on CERC-WET annual meeting at the university of California, Berkeley, on behalf of topic area 1: water use reduction at thermoelectric plants and discussed cooperation plan with US representatives further to finish ten points joint work plan.

The researchers carried out research on low-emission combustion chamber technology with the support of "Experimental Research and Verification of Gas Turbine ELN Combustion Chamber" in the international cooperation project of CAS.
