Large-scale energy storage technology research and development, particularly novel air energy storage technology, cold storage and heat storage materials and systems, and novel pumped hydroelectric storage system.
Scientific Research Instruments and Equipment
1. 10MW advanced compressed air energy storage system
This year we have completed the designs of 10MW advanced compressed energy storage system as well as its main components such as wide-load compressor, high-load turbine, cold and hot heat exchangers, etc. So far, the key parts have been almost manufactured and the integration and performance testing have been carried out. The infrastructure has got rolling and the demonstrator is predicted to be completed in Jun 2016.
2. The National Energy Large-scale Physical Energy Storage Research and Development Center
The National Energy Large-scale Physical Energy Storage Research and Development Center was built by the IET,CAS and the municipal government of Bijie, Guizhou.The center construction is in full swing as the 9000-square-meter office building and 11000-square-meter experimental plant have been constructed as well as the accessories such as water, circuit, gas and fire control systems. The design and basic construction of the five laboratories (the system integration laboratory, the compressor laboratory, the thermal storage laboratory, the gas turbine laboratory and the novel technology laboratory) have been accomplished. Besides, the design of eleven performance testing platforms has been completed. The platforms include the system integration testing platform, the centrifugal closed compressor platform, the ultra-low temperature cold storage testing platform, the medium and low temperature cold storage testing platform, the medium temperature heat storage testing platform, the high temperature heat storage testing platform, the ultra-high temperature heat storage testing platform, the high pressure air release testing platform, etc. The processing of the platforms are being developed, and some have been established and debugged.

2. The National 863 Project ‘The research and demonstration of large-scale supercritical compressed air energy storage system’ from Jan 2013 to Dec 2015.
3. The project ‘The integrated research platform of large-scale physical energy storage research and development’ from 2013 to 2016 was granted by the central budget for National Energy Large-scale Physical Energy Storage Research and Development Center.
4. The enterprise authorized project ‘The research and development of the power system with nature gas press recovery’ from Nov 2015 to Nov 2017.
Major Achievements of 2015
The project ‘The research and development of the power system with nature gas press recovery’ originated from the enterprise was granted The Transfer and Translation Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Organization and Personnel
The Center currently has 38 employees, including4 research professors, 5 associate research professors and senior engineersand4 postdoctoral researchers. Besides, there are 14 graduate students. Among them, there are 1 of chief expert of the 863 Program, 1 of chief expert of the 973 Program, 1 of Hundred Talent Plan, 1 of Youth Outstanding Talents Program of Organization Department of CPC, 1 of Youth and Midlife Technological Innovative Leader of MOST.
By holding the 10MW CAES technology, Institute of Engineering Thermophysics (IET), CAS has set up Zhong-ke-Shuangliang Energy-Storage Systems Company Limited. Besides, agreements have been made with 3 companies on CAES demonstration plants constructions. Twenty-one projects on CAES have been included in the 13thFive Year Plan of the cities or the enterprises.
Patents and Paper
Twenty-eight papers were published in 2015, including 12 indexed by SCI. Four national invention patents and 5 utility model patents were applied for, and2international patent, 12 national invention patents and 11 utility model patents were authorized.
Chen Haisheng won the Chemical Technology T.P. Hou Young Prize.
International Cooperation and Exchanges
In 2015, there are 1 International S&T Cooperation Special Program of China, 1 Key International Cooperation and Exchange Project of NSFC and 2 International Cooperation and Exchange Projects of NSFC. The foreign partners include British universities, University of Leeds, University of Warwick, University of Nottingham, etc. This year, there are 8person-timegoing abroad for academic exchange and inspection of project progress. There are 5 person time participating international academic conferences and 7 foreign scholars were invited to give lectures in IET.
