Research Fields

Large-scale energy storage technology research and development, in particular advanced compressed air energy storage (A-CAES) technology, large-scale cold storage and heat storage technology, flywheel energy storage, and novel pumped hydroelectric storage technology.

Team Building

The center currently has 55 employees, including 10 professors, 12 deputy senior members, 1 postdoctoral researcher, and 50 graduate students. There are 1 member funded by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholar from the Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 chief expert of the 973 Program, 1 member from the Youth and Midlife Technological Innovative Leader selected by the CPC Organization Department and 1 member from the Recruitment Program of Global Experts.

Projects and Major Achievements

1. National Key R&D Project “R&D and demonstration of 10MW-class advanced compressed air energy storage (A-CAES)”, from Jan 2017 to Dec 2020.

2. National 973 Project “Basic research on large-scale supercritical compressed air energy storage (SC-CAES) systems”, from Jan 2015 to Aug 2019.

3. Strategic Pilot S&T of CAS Project “R&D and demonstration of 100MW-classCAES”, from Apr 2018 to Apr 2023.

4. National Science Center infrastructure “Clean energy material testing and diagnostics R&D platform”, from Jan 2018 to Dec 2020.

5. Special International Science Project “International cooperation plan involving large-scale energy storage technology R&D and demonstration”, from Jan 2018 to Dec 2022.

6. The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholar “Research on key scientific problems of compressed air energy storage”, from Jan 2020 to Dec 2024.

7. Project entrusted by the enterprise “Development of 100MW advanced compressed air energy storage system”, from Apr 2019 to Apr 2022.

Major Technological Achievements

1. The key components of the 10MW advanced compressed air energy storage commercial demonstration have been completed, and the project is started.

2. The engineering design of 100MW advanced compressed air energy storage demonstration system, as well as design and partial processing of key components have been completed, and the demonstration is started.

Technology Transfer

For 100MW compressed air energy storage technology and cold and heat storage technology, three subsidiaries of industrial companies have been established. The contract of 100MW advanced compressed air energy storage has been signed. 100MW compressed air energy storage demonstration project has obtained special support for industrial innovation and development of national renewable energy demonstration area. The center participated in the construction of Nanjing future energy system research of IET, CAS.

Patents and Paper

In 2019, 57 papers were published, among which 35 were indexed by SCI. 31 national invention patents, 1 international patent and 15 utility model patents were applied, and 4 national invention patents and 29 utility model patents were authorized.

Awards

1. The project “Industrialization of clean energy heat storage and heating technology” won the first prize of S&T achievements transformation from Beijing Branch of CAS.

2. CHEN Haisheng was granted the special award of China Youth S&T from CASF and the Asian Inventor Award 2019 from AIA.

International Cooperation and Exchanges

In 2019, the Energy Storage R&D Center undertook 1 Special International Science Project from the CAS and 1 Newton Advanced Fellowship from the UK Royal Society. The new projects signed up include 1 International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC-JSPS), 1 CAS President’s International Fellowship for Visiting Scientists , and 1 CAS President’s International Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers. Based on the international partnership program of the International Cooperation Bureau of CAS, the membership of the International Energy Storage Alliance has grown to more than 100, covering more than 20 countries.

Two international conferences were hosted. A total of 13 people went abroad for academic exchanges to boost project progress and 18 participants attended international academic conferences. 4 foreign scholars were invited to give lectures at IET.
