Research Fields

Large-scale energy storage technology research and development, in particular advanced compressed air energy storage (A-CAES) technology, large-scale cold storage and heat storage technology, and novel pumped hydroelectric storage technology.

Team Building

The center currently has 51 employees, including 5 research professors (3 part-time or rehired), 3 project professors, 13 deputy senior staff members, and 23 graduate students.

Projects and Major Achievements

1. The pilot project of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) ‘The research and demonstration of 100MW-class CAES’ from Apr 2018 to Apr 2023.

2. The key project of science and technology achievements transfer and transformation of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) ‘The industrialization of advanced compressed air energy storage’ from Oct 2018 to Dec 2019.

3. National 973 Project ‘Basic research on large-scale supercritical compressed air energy storage (SC-CAES) systems’ from Jan 2015 to Aug 2019.

4. National Science Center infrastructure 'Clean energy material testing and diagnostics R&D platform' from Jan 2018 to Dec 2020.

5. Special International Science Project ‘International cooperation plan of large-scale energy storage technology R&D and demonstration’ from Jan 2018 to Dec 2022.

6. National Key R&D Project ‘R&D and demonstration of 10MW-class A-CAES’ from Jan 2017 to Dec 2020.

Major Technological Achievements

1. Completed the first industrial demonstration system of 1.5MW compressed air energy storage system in China.

2. Completed the key units processi.ng of the 10MW advanced compressed air energy storage commercial project.

3. Completed the key components design of 100MW advanced compressed air energy storage system.

Technology Transfer

The 1.5MW and 10MW compressed air energy storage technologies have been industrialized, and a 10MW compressed air energy storage commercial demonstration power station are under construction. The new archived energy storage power station projects amount to 1450MW in total. In 2018, we have obtained 5 new industrialization science and technology projects with a total fund of CNY 23.7 million of which CNY 8.7 million has been in place, including the key project of science and technology achievements transfer and transformation of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Three new industrial companies were set up with a total registered capital of about CNY 5.05 billion.

Patents and Paper

33 papers were published in 2018, including 22 indexed by SCI. Twenty national invention patents, 25 utility model patents and 1 international patent were applied for; 6 national invention patents and 5 utility model patents were authorized.

Awards

1. The project ‘A novel spray-type packed-bed thermal energy storage technology’ received recognition as a 2018 Top 10 Energy Storage Technology.

2. CHEN Haisheng was granted “The special award for Chinese youth engaged in science and technology by China association for science and technology”, which has been published.

3. XU Yujie was granted “The award for outstanding young energy scientists engaged in energy science and technology by China Energy Research Society.”

International Cooperation and Exchanges

In 2018, the Energy Storage R&D Center undertook 1 Special International Science Project from the CAS and 1 Newton Advanced Fellowship from the Royal Society. The projects of National International Science & Technology Cooperation and Key collaboration from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and National Special Project for International Scientific & Technological Cooperation were successfully concluded. The International Energy Storage Alliance was founded and more than 30 academic and industrial organizations from Britain, the United States, Singapore and other countries participated. Two energy storage international conferences have been hosted. A total of 11 people went abroad for academic exchanges to boost project progress and 7 participants attended international academic conferences. Four foreign scholars were invited to give lectures at IET.
